Cedar Ridge Double Barrel Rye: Tasting Notes
Eye: Orange amber. Splotchy rims, medium legs, medium teardrops.
Nose: Rye French toast, sugars caramelizing with a heavy dose of cinnamon. Smells lighter than the Double Barrel Bourbon, more subtle. Custard with a hint of citrus to cut the fat and sweetness. Over-steeped Indian black tea.
Palate: Sweetened lemon tea, then peach then lemon again. Arnold Palmer on a cool day. Proof hits mid-front tongue, black pepper then sweet. Wood sugars and caramelizing stone fruits punch their way in with a strong wave. Mouthfeel is piquant and heavier than expected, like melted ice cream. Baking spices surge late, drying the tongue and coating while edging under the tongue.
Finish: Sweetened, sugar-glazed stonefruits, rye spice and woody stems around the edges. Mouthwatering. Vanilla baked, rounder than straight extract. Medium to long, center-back of the tongue.
Overall: Fantastic balance of sweet and spicy, mouthwatering, stone fruits and complex sugars studded with baking spices. The double barrel enhances the baking spices and the heavier mouthfeel without adding astringency. Excellently done.
