Drumshanbo Tawny Port Maturation Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey: Tasting Notes
Eye: Iced tea. Thin rims, very long thin legs and small teardrops.
Nose: Vanilla first, fragrant fresh-scraped beans. More proof presence than the classic despite the same level. A bit of astringency from the tawny port, which also gains dark dried dates and prunes. Buttery caramel opens late.
Palate: Port character is much stronger here than on the nose, fresher dark stone fruits while retaining a mild oak backbone. Single pot still spice emerges a bit under the port, enough to showcase it as a whiskey. Mouthfeel is creamy, medium-to-full-bodied and coating. A bit of smoke like a fireside pour of port.
Finish: Mild astringency turns equally mild in numbing, giving way to more dried, darker fruit. Keeps getting better and spicier with air. Long side of medium.
Overall: Delicious. Simple, yet elegantly effective. A ruby port might overwhelm the whiskey with fresh, bright fruitiness - the tawny works better as a pairing with the single pot still whiskey. The tawny enhances the fruit and spice underneath. This is an easy everyday drinker.
